David Davis: Campaign Contribution from the Libertarian Alliance

The Libertarian Alliance, the radical free market and civil liberties policy institute, today pledges £100 (STERLING) to the by-election campaign of David Davis, should there be a poll. It is the first, or among the very first, to make such a pledge to this particular Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.

Libertarian Alliance Director, Dr Sean Gabb, says:

“Many of us in the conservative and libertarian movement have spent the past eleven years watching our country turn into a more genteel copy of East Germany. We watched this at first with horror, then with outrage, more recently with quiet despair.

“Now, at almost the last moment, David Davis has stood forward as the nearest we can expect to a champion. He opposed the Government’s identity card scheme. He led opposition to the Government’s administrative detention law (The 42 day limit). He has resigned his seat and is standing in the by-election so that some of us can have a referendum on the Labour police state.

“If there is a poll in his constituency, Mr Davis needs our support. We want a high turnout. We want a crushing victory for Mr Davis over any opponent who dares show his face. When Mr Davis returns to Parliament, we must ensure that he has the fullest right to look the Government in the face and say he speaks for us in defending our liberties.

“The Libertarian Alliance is not a wealthy organisation. But we pledge 100 to Mr Davis for his campaign if there is a poll in his constituency. The moment nominations have closed, and if there is more than one candidate, we will send our cheque to:

“We encourage all other organisations and individuals who seek to defend freedom also to give – to give according to their ability. This is not a time to think of party or any other sectarianism. We ourselves have no illusions about Mr Davis. He has spoken and voted on other issues in ways that we deplore. He will do so in the future. But we share his disgust for administrative detention, however it may be dressed in counter-terrorist clothing. We share his opposition to the march into Big Brother Britain. Therefore, we are honoured to be the first to pledge financial support for his campaign.”
