While we have turned our economies into a giant counting of other people’s money, and fussed about what statues go on the plinths, the Chinese have got on with the business of high civilisation.

  1. Whilst I rejoice in Chinese performances of western classics I am also aware of less desirable developments in the Central Kingdom

  2. Communists don’t need any lessons from us, in the ancient art, which has recently enjoyed something of a revival in the west, of fussing publicly about what statues should go on plinths. And as for counting money, wasn’t it the Chinese that invented the abacus?
