People like him might even allow libertarians to re-infiltrate and redirect the Tory Party…..again.
To consolidate for ever the Classical-liberal/libertarian/old-Whig ascendancy, in time to stop the planet going down to a new Dark Age, a major party needs to be captured, and captured fast.
There is the LPUK, which I have decided that we support electrorally as a strategic principle. But it will take years for it to get more than just noticed on the sidelines, I predict, and we have not much time left.
You could argue that we ought to target the Labour Party, and completely redirect it. This is because its guts are currently spilling out in the bloody dust, and it’s always screaming about “new ideas” and “new initiatives”. But I don’t think it would agree with the sort that I have in mind for it – also, I don’t fancy taking on the possible regime for repayment of its debts.
The Lovvey-Dems’ trouble, for us, is that they believe too fervently in , er, well, whatever it is they think they believe in, and I don’t think that individual liberty and Natural Rights features too highly on their list. they may, for all I know, still contain in their ranks a woman who shrieked at me at a drinks party in 1986: “we will just have to rule by decree!”
Nope: it’s gotta be the Tories. They’ve still got reasonable national and local machinery, offices, biddable people who know lots of old ladies, and a smattering of chaps with funds: and they are unencumbered by not too much ideological baggage.

Name six of these “libertarians.” As for “redirecting”, who is kidding whom? Thatcher closed them out in 1985, saying “We have enough ‘new ideas.'”
Are you seriously saying the people like (say) Peter Clarke were really libertarians? I met these people. In FOREST’s offices. “Toughies…” I heard them discussing their politics. Neanderthals and dupes. As useful to the Labour Party as ‘Militant’ was to the Tory Party. Go figure…
Good stuff !!
Tremendous sense of relief when someone actually talks logic.
Hannan is one of the reasons I’m a Conservative. What a breath of fresh air he is.
He does give good value, a great orator

Oh, and not all Tories with money are dead yet: they might leave us some.

“we will just have to rule by decree!”
Doesn’t that just mean “legislation”?
Tony

Who this “we”, Paleface?
Where is George H. Smith when we need him?
