I wonder if it’s related to the German word ‘Kacke’.
Greek adjective: kakos, kaka, kakon (bad)
Often used as noun – eg, Callimachus: “Mega biblion, mega kakon” – Big book, big evil.
I first read this word on the Indian economist Atanu Dey’s site describing the Indian ruling class.
Douglas Adams put it very well in the Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (I’m paraphrasing here):
“Those people who most want to rule people are the people least suited for the job.”
and
“Anyone capable of getting himself elected president should under no circumstances be allowed to do the job.”
In the 40s and 50s, someone who was “cack-handed” was, as a rule, bad at anything to do with manual dexterity: such as watch-repairing, making gears and screws on a lathe, or servicing one’s automobile.
Cack is an old word for shite–at least here in the North.
