  1. Voting is often more effective than writing a letter to Father Christmas.

As Mencken said – “democracy is the system by which the voters get to ask for what they want and they deserve to get it – GOOD AND HARD”.

Pity about the minority though. For example in the Presidential election in the United States in 1964.

  2. Paul,

Can you give an instance, in any election, where a single individual vote (not a casting vote) has made a difference to which candidate was elected, and where the result has stood without there being another vote?

There’s another reason why writing to Santa is better than voting for a politician. Santa doesn’t (to my knowledge, at least) lobby for, make or support bad policies that harm innocent people.

  3. That is a different question Neil, but actually I can.

For example my friend Larry Henson lost the ward I am sitting in by one vote – and no it was not because I forgot to vote for him (I did vote for him).

As for big historical events by a few votes.

The last Canton election vote in St Gallen was one by won (or lost) by one household.

St G. was the deciding vote in the decision to war against the dissenting Cantons in Switzerland in the war of 1847 – crushing dissent and establishing a real Federal government in 1848 (as opposed to the defensive alliance of Cantons that had existed before then).

This was used as a example by Lincoln – American Civil War (no right to secede).

    Big enough?
