  1. Yes the Panopticon – the constant observation prison (to which non criminals were also to be sent – something that is often forgotten) of Jeremy Bentham.

    And 13 Departments of State to control all almost every aspect of life, and Edwin Chadwick going around writing dishonest reports justifying government intervention in, basically, everything.

    They were not a majority of 19th century Liberals – not at first. But gradually people such as Gladstone were defeated – and the statist “Liberals” won out.

    Still Nick Clegg still says he opposes I.D. cards.

    A ghost of the old liberalism – really of the Old Whigs.

    The Old Whigs who opposed BOTH the Divine Right of Kings and the Divine Right of Parliaments.

    People such as Chief Justice Sir John Holt

    He would have made mincemeat of arguments for government I.D. cards.
