It is of course worrying that so much copper wire is trashed by modern “recycling” methods. Although copper is not going to run out by 2020 (it was forecast in GCSE and O-level text books of the 1980s to run out in 2000, remember?) it is still a relatively expensive and slightly rare metal.
I even unwind old blown transformers to get as much as possible of the coils out undamaged.
