But I think Western Christianity stressed changing your ways, putting on the gospel armour, putting on the new personality, etc. You were meant to read the Bible, and reflect on it and become a better person. In my view, Orthodoxy has been nothing more than a ceremony, a nice “show” in church with incense and pictures, but at no point has it encouraged the Orthodox to internalise the gospel message. Islam is the same too — drunkenness and prostitution are rife among radicalised Muslims, precisely because they don’t have to change themselves. Corruption in Eastern Europe reflects the fact that personal changes were not wrought by the Christian message…
