Just like the Taiwanese Parliament.
Democracy as part rugby scrum, part wrestling match. Not exactly an impressive site – in fact a total mess.
Russia is more orderly – Mr Putin gives an order and (regardless of what it is) everyone obeys, or they die.
So most obey.
The “chaos” of the Yeltsin years – with different points of view on radio and television stations, opposition Governors elected to States of the Russian Federation, and promises of trial by jury (and on and on) all gone (and soon to be forgotten). Ditto billionaires who stake out an independent line – sorry lads but “corporatism” means control of business by the state, not the other way round (for those rich “capitalists” who get confused on this point – read Fritz T.s “I Paid Hitler” and remember what happened to him, Turner in “German Big Business and the rise of the Nazis” points out that most capitalists were not as stupid as Fritz and did NOT back the rise to power of the National Socialists).
Being rich is fine (although “national resources” should be under State ownership – that is seems to be point of principle with Mr Putin) – as long you back the political line at every point, if you have a contrary point of view and you express that opinion, then things will not go well for you……. (no Koch brothers for Russia).
Mr Putin is no Marxist (indeed the KGB nickname for Western Marxists in his day was “shit eater” – a Westerner stupid enough to believe the propaganda about “big business” the “capitalist corporations” being to blame for everything), but he believes in order and discipline – via an all mighty state (more Fichte than Karl Marx).
There is also the great cosmic joke……
Mr Putin (a non Marxist) is backing the Marxists (dancing round their statures of Lenin) in the Ukraine (for logical chess player reasons), and a Marxist community organiser from Chicago will end up (due to domestic pressure) being forced to back the anti Marxists (LBJ style social democrats) in the Ukraine.
It doesn’t even look like much of a fight–def not pay-per-view material. The half-arsed neck twist being attempted on the old bloke is risibly incompetent.
I suppose the idea of turning it into an oil painting comes from the the joker at the base of the frame. His posture does resemble one of those odd poses from classical paintings of mythology-they are usually looking in awe at cherubs or Diana the Huntress–not a pensioners brawl.
