AN URGENT REFERENDUM REFLECTION

Whatever today’s secularists think, the Act of Union (1707) brought about a Christian-based socio-political unity rooted in the ‘Protestant Reformed Religion’. After three centuries, these religious values have been well-nigh deleted from our culture. Where Judeo-Christian ideas once permeated British family and community life, atheistic and amoral Marxist materialism has eaten out the heart of our once-prized and admired heritage.
Should we then be surprised at the UK’s current crisis? Indeed, for those who know their biblical history, our very Judeo-Christian heritage would remind us that this is not the first time such a crisis of national disintegration has taken place. The Old Testament narrates the history of a divided kingdom, when the nation of Israel was torn apart after the tragic end of King Solomon’s once-glorious reign (see 1 Kings 11-12). Furthermore, the immediate cause of national disarray – when ten of the tribes of Israel broke away to become the northern kingdom – was sexual immorality and multi-faith idolatry.
Should Prime Minister David Cameron’s unflattering legacy be that he presided over the break-up of the UK, it was his namesake King David who personally started the rot in ancient Israel. Indeed, he set an appalling example to his successor Solomon in sexual promiscuity and adultery (see 2 Samuel 11). Divine judgement fell upon Solomon because of his idolatrous and sexual apostasy. This judgement is starkly stated: “I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant” (1 Kings 11: 11).
While Solomon’s reign ended in ruin, it was his father who ‘sowed the seed’ and set the standard. King David’s adultery with Bathsheba – he also arranged for her valiant husband to be killed – was rebuked by God’s servant the prophet Nathan. Utterly unlike the average Archbishop of Canterbury, the faithful prophet challenged the king: “Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight?” … Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife … Behold, I will raise up adversity from your own house…” (2 Samuel 12: 9-11).
Reader, if you’ve made it this far, is the connection not obvious? The post-war explosion of sexual promiscuity correlates with the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland, occasional Welsh discontent and now the possible secession of Scotland from the UK. The removal of Section 28, the royal immoralities of recent decades, child abuse and David Cameron’s zealous promotion of so-called ‘same-sex marriage’ are the immediate backdrop to the Scottish referendum. As the prophet Nathan accused King David, so David Cameron et al are guilty of ‘despising the commandments of the LORD’. We are thus facing the judgement of Almighty God!
If the UK ceases to be, we’ve had it coming for a long time. At time of writing, I passionately hope we might stay united. If the ‘YES’ campaign is victorious, it’ll be terribly sad. If the vote is ‘NO’, it’ll be God’s mercy not the late tears and promises of David and his Westminster élite. In any event, a national repentance is the only way to avert ruination on an alarming and almost unimaginable scale. No amount of political and economic tinkering will make any lasting difference without ‘broken and contrite hearts’ (Psalm 51: 17). However, as the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ was the promised hope of Israel and the world (John 1: 29), so ‘great David’s greater Son’ (James Montgomery) – ‘one greater than Solomon’ (Matthew 12: 42) – remains our only hope. As I commit myself to ongoing prayer for reformation and revival, I pray that God might yet have mercy upon us all. If – for all the best reasons – you truly love the United Kingdom, please join me.

I find the idea that a loving God would break up an entire nation to punish the sexual wrongdoings of its King (one man) rather comical, and not really very supportive that Yahweh is either very just or very wise.
I agree that we are all sinners (I certainly am – my own thoughts are often incredibly dark) and I agree that we should exercise self restraint and try and live as God (and the better part of ourselves) wishes we did.
However, I think (and I will now say) that Dr Clifford’s language is often not helpful – not well suited for his purpose.
As for the “Nationalist” movement in both Ulster and Scotland (and Wales for that matter) it is a matter of historical fact that it was massively influenced (indeed in many ways is outgrowth of) the cultural left – the revolt against tradition (including traditional Christianity).
It is also founded on lies – lies (that I confess) I have sometimes fallen for myself.
For example, I remember standing in the museum in B… in Country Antrim (the most Protestant County in Ulster) looking at the list of Mayors.
I noticed that one of the Mayors had a Papal Knighthood – and I was shocked. Surely in pre 1960s Ulster (in County Antrim itself) a Roman Catholic could not have been Mayor (“discrimination” would not have allowed it….).
Yet it turned out that back in the “bad old days” Roman Catholics had been Mayors of towns that were overwhelmingly Protestant, And senior police officers, and former British army generals and …… were Roman Catholics. I remember reading the obituary of a British Army General (born and bred in Ulster) who became one of the most senior policemen in the land – in the “evil” 1950s.
The Northern Ireland “Civil Rights” movement (which I assumed was basically correct – but later perverted by the IRA) was mostly based upon LIES. Certainly there was some discrimination (especially in the big cities of Belfast and Londonderry), but the all pervasive nature of it (that is claimed by the BBC and the education system) was a lie.
In fact it was a double lie, as the “Roman Catholics” who led the “Civil Rights” movement (including the priests) were not really Roman Catholics at all – as their attitude to the teachings (on abortion and other matters) and traditions (such as the Latin Mass) of their own Church showed.
The force of “Liberation Theology” (not really theology at all) was at work – as much in Ulster as in Latin America. Even Roman Catholic priests (who, by the Canon Law of their own Church, should have not even allowed the burial of unrepentant terrorists in consecrated ground) actually hid arms and explosives for the IRA.
As for the tissue of lies of “exploitation” (and so on) that are the stock-in-trade of the Scottish and Welsh Nationalists.
England had not (in the 20th century) “exploited” any of these places – it is a vast (stinking) lie.
Today we shall see if lies defeat the truth – the truth about the United Kingdom.
If the Scots vote for independence then I WISH THEM WELL. For example I hope they get out of the European Union (and thus have real independence).
But I am filled with foreboding – as a new country based upon lies (lies about “discrimination” and “exploitation”) is not likely to be good. Already the “cultural” left in Scotland have turned from blaming “the English” for all their troubles to blaming “the landlords” (who are “not really Scottish”) and other scape goats for very problem (real problems and fantasy problems). It is horrible – vile.
The key test will be if the new government of an “independent Scotland” seeks independence from the European Union.
If not – then real independence is NOT what the left establishment in Scotland really want – they just want to be the local P.C. administrators of an international Social Democratic elite.
Ian’s hero, David Hume, was a man of no religious faith – but I think he would be as horrified by the nature of Scottish “nationalism” (and all these other “movements”) with their chip-on-the-shoulder and blaming “the rich” for everything, as anyone else.
I believe that Dr Clifford’s article is accurate and there are certainly parables with today’s ‘leaders’ – and I use the word very loosely. But, you raise some very interesting comments, not least the phony ‘Christians’ that I believe have turned Britain into a new Babylon.
Britain now murders more babies every year, AND has more teenage pregnancies than most other ‘civilised’ societies, and allows child molesters and child rapists to go unpunished. Homosexuality is the political order of the day, indeed, it appears that to get on in politics, Art, Music, Film / TV, Politics etc, it is almost mandatory, (or at least preferable to the bankster controllers) for their new kid on the block to be bent.
Our country is now so immoral that it is clear to me that we are being ruled by satanists, who are pretending to hold the high moral ground.
We now have phony ‘Nationalists’ in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, none of whom are REAL nationalists, but are more akin to champagne communists, bent on Stalinist / Trotskyist views of a distorted and corrupt libertarianism.
IF the Scottish National Party was a genuine nationalist party, upholding the God given freedoms that we used to take for granted, but have all but disappeared, then I would whole heartedly support them. But, the SNP is definitely NOT!
Salmond & Co are EUrophiles and bankster-puppets, just like Cameron, Clegg and Miliband. The only difference is that they serve different banksters! But, NONE of those puppets serve the people of Britain.
I am writing this a couple of days after the people of Scotland had seen through Salmond’s scam and have rejected the SNP’s plan to separate from the Union. The only real voting success they achieved was in communist-controlled Glasgow, where immorality and enforced multiculturalism is very evident.
There were lots of Pakistanis, West Indians and Africans parading around in KILTS, pretending to be Scottish! This was an example of how Scotland would’ve been changed – irreparably and not for the better – if Salmond had won the Independence vote.
True nationalists are not the devils that the bankster-led media machine portrays, as true nationalists will always put their own people first in their own country, which is a policy that every country should adopt. This does not mean that nationalists dislike or hate foreigners, quite the reverse, because nationalism extols the virtues of true diversity – where people in Africa look like Africans; people in Japan look like Japanese; people in India look like Indians. Anything else is not normal, especially when mass immigration has been enforced, without a mandate from the people.
We must correct people when they denigrate nationalism, as true nationalism is the only way to break the shackles of our collective slavery and determine our own future.
Long before the Act of the Union in 1707, these islands have been home to the people of Britain / Brython / Bryddon for fifteen thousand years, and we are one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Very few indigenous cultures are as rich in heritage and culture as the people of these isles.
Our culture is uniquely British and we are NOT a mongrel race, anyone who believes that we are, should read ‘Blood of the Isles’, by Professor Bryan Sykes – who has proven, scientifically, that we are they same group of people that dominated this land before the end of the last Ice Age.
Unfortunately, for far too long, we have allowed our people to be dominated, indeed enslaved, by corrupt controllers that only serve money, power and Satan. This cycle must end soon.
